Making the Metaverse
For the past few months I've been busy working on an exciting project for a new startup company. The company invited me to get involved in the creation of 'Metaverses'. This would involve me working with the team in designing, modelling & uploading a number of different 3D worlds that users would be able to visit.
What is a Metaverse?
The term 'Metaverse', has recently been gathering awareness in the linguistic aether of mainstream society. Mainly, this was done through Facebook's namechange to 'Meta'. The Metaverse essentially refers to an online world, usually 3D, that is accessible by multiple users. People can walk around and perform various actions within these worlds, depending on what tools the developers have given the end-user.
Why is the Metaverse becoming important?
The main functions of Metaverses have arguably already been implemented within online video games such as Second Life, or Runescape. Mark Zuckerberg has brought it into the mainstream through his plans to create the new corporate version of the Matrix, 'Meta'. However, the concept of the Metaverse has been gaining traction for the past 3 or 4 years thanks to the world of crypto.
Companies such as Decentraland & Sandbox have been developing decentralised Metaverses in which users can purchase virtual land & have a stake within the online world through the blockchain. The main strength of these online worlds is the decentralised aspects to them. This is perhaps why Mark Zuckerberg's 'Meta' idea may not be the best implementation of what this technology could be. 'Meta', is a centralised entity with its own corporate interests determined by its shareholders requirements of constant growth & expansion. The decentralised aspects of blockchain-based Metaverses represents a democratisation of power and freedom to users in the Metaverse. Of course, these decentralised worlds will be created by entities that function as a business, but due to the anonymous nature of blockchain technology, these companies would not be granted as much stake in their users data as Facebook already does. This, in my personal opinion, is where the best Metaverses will be created.
